1st Literary Society Meeting
We had our first meeting last week. I think it was a success. When you start something and are not exactly sure what your expectations are it is hard to have a gauge with which to measure it a failure or a success. We had such a large interest that we couldn't meet in our house as there wasn't enough room. For our first meeting everyone was to bring a poem to share. Everyone young and old shared something. It was wonderful to see the children reading their favorite poems in front of a large group. Shel Silverstein was a favorite for many of them. All of the families that joined us currently homeschool or have in the past. I would love to see a more diverse group next month.
Several people have asked what exactly did you do? Here's a brief summary of the evening. We sat around a large table so that everyone could be seen. We started the evening with a brief summary of the origin of this crazy idea. Then our one original limerick was read. Then each child took turns reading their selection. A couple recited theirs from memory but most read from a book. Some chose to say why they picked it and others just read their poem. Then each of the adults shared. We had a wide variety of poetry, Poe, Dante, a chicken poem, and favorites from childhood.
It was a wonderful evening to share with like minded people. Next month we will be sharing our favorite book series. If you would like to join us let me know and I'll get you the details!
